Keep Your Kitchen Tidy with Organized Shelves and Cabinets

A woman taking care of dishes in well-organized kitchen.
There’s more to keeping your kitchen clean than just cleaning it often. It also means keeping your plates, pans, and food items in order, so they are easy to find and where they belong. Most kitchens don’t have a lot of cabinet and shelf room. On the other hand, there are some quick and easy ways to make the most of the storage room in the kitchen of your rental home.

The first thing to know about organizing a kitchen is that there should be a clear line between the things you store on the top, bottom, and shelves. It’s best to keep dishes and cups, cookbooks, and other things you use often in cabinets on top.
If you have a pantry, don’t just throw all of your food in there; order it. Sort things into groups based on the type of food or container, how often they are used, and other factors.
Displaying pretty dishes and glasses on open shelves in eye-catching groups is a good idea. This is the best place for heavy pots and pans, small tools, mixing bowls, and cleaning supplies. To keep things safe, don’t forget to put cabinet locks on them.

Maximizing Space with Organizers

After deciding where to place your items, you need to come up with a way to keep them organized. Most of the time, the easiest ways work best. Using organizers made just for kitchen shelves, cabinets, and drawers is one of the best ways to keep them in order. Same thing goes for knife blocks and spice racks: they keep your tools in order, just like silverware trays do. If your spice cabinet is a mess, it can be annoying to cook in your kitchen. But if you get organized, you can put some of the less-used spices in the back and keep your favorite spices close at hand.

Repurpose Everyday Items for Storage

If standard kitchen organizers are too limiting or expensive, consider repurposing other types of organizers for use in the kitchen. For instance, a simple magazine case can be used to keep different things. You could also use them to organize cleaning supplies by putting the most used things in the front.

Similarly, the file folder can be used in both the office and the home. To keep baking pans, lids, and other loose things neat, you could put an expensive large metal file organizer in a cabinet. For stability, use hook-and-loop tape or a shelf cushion with a rubber back.

Creative Canned Food Storage

It can be hard to keep things neat and easy to see when it comes to canned foods. Wire shelves made for closets can be used to organize canned goods. Wire closet shelving usually has a lip on the bottom that, when turned 45 degrees, can be used as a great cabinet rack. As a can is used, the ones that are left will move down, making it easy to quickly check your stock. No more looking for lost cans or wondering what’s in that jumbled cabinet with this easy hack.

Use Tension Rods and Repurposed Items for Cleaner Cabinets

A simple tension rod is a great way to keep cleaning supplies in order and off the floor of the closet. You can hang spray bottles, rags, and gloves by putting a tension rod inside a lower closet. This way, your things stay off the floor of the cabinet and your best things are always close at hand.

Getting the shelves and drawers in the kitchen in order saves time and work. It can also help you keep track of what you already have, which can keep you from buying things you don’t need. Using a few simple tips and some things you’ve already got lying around, you can easily get your kitchen shelves and cabinets in order.
